Is it possible to remove, and replace the oil pump on a 56 with a 312 without removing the oil pan? Thanks

Absolutely, pretty easy.
loosen jam nuts on both ends of pickup tube, remove 3 bolts securing pump to block, back both jam nuts out completely then just wiggle pump and tube away from the block. Tube will come out of pump but stay in oil pan. Be careful with the drive shaft that will come down with pump.

That's a relief. The tube that goes into the oil pump from the pan was leaking, at the pump. I figured I would get a new gasket, and a new pump couldn't hurt either, but I didn't want to go thru all the work of removing the pan ....at least for now.
