I have need to carry a manual wheelchair for my wife. The trunk of the 2002 T-Bird is too small to hold most wheelchairs. It seems simple enough to add like a "bike rack" type of assembly to carry a 21 Kgram (50 Pounds) manual wheelchair.

First of all, welcome to the Forum. You'll find a lot of useful info here by doing various searches.
Second, The bike rack is ok, but I think it would be on at all times. Another potential may be a light weight tow hitch, which would be mounted underneath the car. Then get one of those narrow bike platforms that fits into the hitch. Then you just fold the chair and strap it to that platform or maybe a strap over to the trunk lid prior to closing it. That way if you wanted to travel about town without it, just pull it out of the hitch.
Just my input.
