Manual shaft/throttle shaft seal replacement

My 1955 Thunderbird, equipped with a Fordomatic air cooled transmission, has developed a leak from the manual shaft/throttle shaft seals. Can these seals be replaced with the transmission installed in the car? If they can be replaced in the car, does anyone have any tips before I attempt the seal replacement?
