The 312 engine on my automatic 57 T-bird sometimes dies (10%?) when I pull out from a stop. Dangerous! Otherwise it runs beautiful and sits and idles. I can then restart no problem if I give it gas very slightly. I first thought it was vapor lock as it happened when I first purchased a couple of months ago and it was a 90 degree day - but has happened since on 45 degree day. I bought a back up electronic fuel pump I can turn on just in case. Any ideas? Has Pretronix and no indication it is ignition. Any Ideas?

you can try running some carb cleaner through it. i have had several of the old ford 4100 carbs do this. most likely dirty jets or timing off a hair. you might want to advance distributor a little and see if that makes a difference. is your idle set too low? is choke working properly? a few things for you to try or check. most likely one of them is the culprit. good luck.

Accelerator pump is most likely the culprit! Would to hurt to just rebuild the carb when replacing the accel pump.

THanks all - It was rebuilt, whole engine and carbs 5 years or so ago, bu few miles 1,200 or so. I will see how hard it is to replace acc pump and just do it!

It shouldn't be too difficult. the pump diaphragm is very readably attained. You have to remove the carb to get to the cover screws. But first check that the adjustment is set right. It is adjustable. Make Shure there is enough travel to actuate. Just look in the throttle body as you actuate the throttle by hand and see if you see a jet of fuel.

Look
I looked at the part # you provided and it showed "ACCELERATOR PUMP CUP" would this be what you are talking about a stinkin $8 part? Something I could do with normal mechj slkills?
Does it quit on low gas only? Is it fine with a full tank?
No, tank is near full. Thanks.

If you have the Holley 4000 Tea-Pot you do not have to remove the carb. Just remove the air cleaner stud and the 4 top screws and lift the fuel bowl top off. The pump shaft is spring-loaded. Remove the shaft and replace the diaphragm (cup). Mine was rebuilt about 5 years ago too, but this ethanol fuel turned it hard. The new blue one did the trick.

57s didn't come with a teapot carb
