Hello.

I have a 1996 T-Bird 3.8 v6 lx
I want to swap the engine out of it with a 5.0 or a Ford 408 windsor stroker.

Would I be able to?
What all would I need and have to replace other than the transmission?
I can't use the 3.8 trans so I can replace it with the trans from a 5.0 mustang of the same year right?

You could always find a 4R70W for a V8 Thunderbird. The same automatic was used in the Mustangs as well. The transmissions for the V8's are a bit different on the internals.

Anything for a 89+ Thunderbird with a V8 will work, even the 5-speed from a Supercoupe would work well behind a SBF.
 
The thunderbirds trans are a Mazda 5 speed trans, also found in some older f150s. Truck 5 speeds were better because they had the brass syncros instead of plastic ones in the tbirds
