I..., uh..., uh,,., just kind of unexpectantly bought a 1966 Thunderbird convertible on Ebay. I thought I was low-balling my bid. Turns out it was the only, and winning bid. Anyway, anybody know where I can look up the VIN number. I've found a lot of sites that supposedly do this, but they seem to want 17 digit VINs. This has an 11 digit VIN which the Marti website states is correct.

This page contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated. As an eBay Partner, and Amazon Associate I may be compensated if you make a purchase at no cost to you.

Are you experiencing buyer's remorse? You gotta let us all know how this turns out🙂

I was looking at same issue but didn't find a site for the older VINs. But, try plunking the VIN # in google and see what comes up.

What do you want to look up the VIN number for? Vehicle history? HA! Good luck with that! Not trying to be inconsiderate, but you would be hard pressed to find anything related to maintenance or prior owner history unless you ask them (this is not even considering if the vehicle had multiple owners). Marti auto reports only go back to 1967, so I am really not sure where you can go beyond that.

Buyer's remorse? Yes and no. If I hadn't bought this car and somebody else bought it for this price I would have regretted not buying it. Now that I own it, I want as much information on it as possible. For $40, Marti will provide a copy of the original order sheet. I would like to decode the VIN.

I have several vintage cars and prior to March was able to get info on previous owners which I then tracked backwards through the State DMV’s, I then used the Internet to track these people down. For some reason the VIN data no longer goes back to the eleven number VINs, although you could contact the State DMV for the previous owners Title and then work backwards as I did . Very time consuming.

You can look at the Thunderbird registary to see if it has been listed there before. https://www.tbird.info/

Man that sounds like a lot of work. What where you looking for by doing all this? Vehicle history? Honestly I would have mixed feelings seeing as you could have got a car from a previous owner that beat the crap out of the car. Though on the flip side you could have also got a car from someone that garaged it most of its life as well.

Thanks for everyone's help. I was able to find the VIN on Vinmagic.com. I later saw this post and tried this link and sure enough, the car is in the registry. I thought the VIN would list options and the original color of the exterior, interior, etc. as delivered. I guess it does show which engine, but no other options. On the registry site there are codes mentioned. It lists 76A-M-22. I think that means Convertible, Wimbledon White, and Blue vinyl? Is there a data plate somewhere on the car that will list options as built?

If you look under the seat (rear seat I think) you might find a factory build sheet stuffed into the seat springs. It might give you some of the information you are looking for.

Car received this week. To update the post, I did fly at to Cali to look over the car and meet the seller before completing the transaction. As expected, it does look better in pictures than in person, but not that much better. I'm very happy with the purchase and even my wife is speaking to me again. She has always disliked this body style, but after seeing the car she wanted to go for a ride and plans to go grocery shopping in it. Everywhere we've gone, admittedly not very many places as we've only had the car three days, people have complimented our "ride."

There are a few things I need to fix sooner than later. It is incontinent leaving a 4 inch spot on the ground after sitting overnight, the foam in the passenger seat is dry and disintegrating with every use, and just last night, the drivers window refused to operate after working initially. Anybody have recommendation for T-Bird expertise in Colorado/Southern Colorado?

The first 2 numbers and letter are the body style
Not sure of the next letter,
Next group is color,
Than the date,
Than axle,
