Hi can anyone tell me if a 9 inch centre can be bolted straight into a 9 3/8 housing & if there is anything that needs to be done. I have read things like the axles are a different length to the standard 9 inch.

Your '66 should have a 9" different models and years may have different axle lengths. there are charts on the internet showing rear end widths. Your question is not really clear to me.
 
The short answer is yes. The only thing to check is the spline count on your axles. They are either 28 or 31. You may need to change the side gears to match. Good luck!
