Thunderbird Year
1965
I have owned my '65 Thunderbird for 39 years and always assumed the carb was original to the car (original 390 also). I thought it looked like every other Autolite 4100. But I just noticed the number stamped on it -- C5ZF F. The application for this comes up as a Ford 1964-67 289 cu. What do I have here?

"C5ZF-F is for a 1965 289 (non-K code) with PCV and automatic transmission. Applicable models were Fairlane/Torino, Comet/Cyclone, Mustang, and Ranchero (not Falcon)."

From a Mustang forum with some very savvy hobbyists. Its a very common carb for Ford/Mercury.

That forum member cited this source:
This info comes from Bob Mannel’s small block Ford book - the Bible for all things small block Ford from 1962 - 1970.

I'm not a Ford/Merc guy but it seems strange that a small block 289 carb would be used on a big block 390, I would think maybe the engine would be under-carbed ?!?

Thanks, Frankie. That's what I was afraid of. I also have a '65 Mustang 289. I believe that CFZF-F is about 300 cfm, well below the Tbird original.

I use an edelbrock 1406 on my 65, works well. The original was long gone when I got the car, there was a Summit racing one on there that was in bad shape. I think the original was 600 cfm.

I would go on the prowl for an original carb and not a 'one size fits all' aftermarket product....the jets, bore size, adjustments may make it work kinda, sorta but its not the same as the factory engineered specific setup used in an original carb. The aftermarket carbs are geared to 'bolt on and go' for the shade tree folks as a 'quick fix' IMO.
