Having a hard time with getting a new shift lever to easily lock into the old park detent. Is there an adjustment that can be made or will the detent need to be replaced as well? Seems like there is not enough travel to get it fully counter clockwise and completely into the detent.

With my '65 had to purchase replacement detent from Bird Nest in Oregon.
Thanks

Looks like a pretty involved job getting the old detent out.
The knurled end of the new shift lever looks thicker than my old shift lever. Hopefully a new detent allows for this.

If it's thicker and knurled you might have the wrong shift lever. Easier to check than replacing the detent.

Actually, I've never heard of one of these shift levers being knurled. That would increase the thickness and also would cause more wear to the detent.

Knurled was the wrong description for the end. Just wondering if the new replacement lever is designed to fit a newer detent with slightly different parameters.

Never heard of parameters changing for the detent. When you say that the shift lever is not locking into the old Park detent, what is happening exactly? If it's that the car will not stay in Park or hops out of Park and goes into reverse, that's a common issue for these cars. If that is what is happening and you've replaced the shift lever, then the detent itself could be worn, and/or the steering column bushings are shot.
