Cruise o matic… MX I believe. Bird was bought at auction 8 months ago and don’t have a lot of history on her. Best we can tell she sat for the past 10 or so years. Runs and drives… but suddenly lost reverse one day. Decided to start diagnosing my loss of reverse issue… dropped the pan half expecting to see band bits but nothing substantial beyond a bunch of grey in the bottom of the pan. Removed the filter… and out falls a square notched piece of metal that appears to have been sitting on top of the filter?? Doesn’t look ‘broken’ but sure looks to not be where it’s supposed to be. I’ve looked at a few internal diagrams for the trans and I don’t see anything that resembles it. Hoping some transmission guru might recognize it.

Thanks in advance.

When reverse went out in my ‘65, it had to be rebuilt. That are fairly cheap and easy, if you can find someone who remembers how!

That piece holds the end of the reverse band in place. Without it the reverse band will not compress on the drum. Should be able to replace it without removing the transmission

Thanks inspector! Sounds like I need to find some instructions on how that aspect of the reverse band goes. Good news is maybe fixing this isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Any chance this part has a name… might help finding something on it in the shop manual.

Dug into it some more today only to find one of the ears was in fact broke off the rear band… which was why the strut was out of place.

Seems like there’s not much in the way of parts available for these rear bands. Super disappointing

Sorry, I forgot that you have a Cruise o Matic and not a Ford o Matic.

Yeah, I think the world is trying to tell me not to spend a penny on this transmission… seems bands just don’t exist anymore.
