I have one set of keys...the original set...I would like to have a backup/duplicate set. Has anyone ever done this? How? Thanks!

When I got my car it had three different keys, one for the ignition switch, one for the doors and one for the trunk. I took all the locks out and popped the cap off the cylinders. I figured out which tumblers matched up best and rekeyed them by assembling the tumblers in correct sequence. Now I have two keys. One for the doors and ignition switch and one for the trunk and glove box.

The ignition key on the left is the type that fit the FoMoCo replacement locks for the ignition and door which are keyed the same. It has not been determined when this type come into service it appeared in the late sixties or early seventies and is available today from most Thunderbird parts suppliers. The key on the right is an original and can occasionally be found with matching locks at swap meets (Note the lack of a groove on the side shown). Both keys are grooved on the side not shown.

The same information applies to the trunk and glove box keys and locks which are also keyed the same.

This type tag was attached to keys when the car was new and to replacement key and lock sets. The tag contained the key number and instructions to record and detach. Some of the tag instructions was to record and destroy.

I have an extra set of blanks, I’d be happy to mail them to you to get them cut at a lock smith.
Consider it a welcome to the thunderbird forum.
Hi Jim my name is Nancy and I'm new to the forum! I do have a similar dilemma and and needing to find additional blanks for my 62. Do you still have those blanks available? Thank you

Ford key blanks from that area are available:

And re-keying lock cylinders from 60's cars to work with an existing key is pretty straight forward.
I had a local locksmith do it for several vintage Corvette cars.
