1962 trunk lid springs too stiff

It seems like it takes more pressure than it should to push down on my truck lid. I’m not referring to trying to latch it but instead pushing down between when it is fully open and when it makes contact with the latch. I know that adjusting it has something to do with the rod that goes from side to side and fits in notches on either side. The only reason I am concerned is because I don’t want to bend the sheet metal after many times of closing. I have never adjusted on before and am looking for recommendations

No I have not. But it springs up very easily so I was assuming it was not the hinges but I can try.

Yes, if the torsion bars on your '62 are like the ones on my '64, they are adjustable. You can find videos online on how to install and adjust torsion bars. Be careful, these things are under tension and if one of them breaks or gets away from you, it can cause some damage.
