I am considering trying to buy a 1957 and do not understand the Data Plate. It reads D7FH301139, 40 EE X4 31 E 3 1
aLSO, WHICH 17 CHARACTERS ARE THE VIN? Thanks for the help?

VIN numbers did not come into being until 1981. The Thunderbird you are looking at has the serial number D7FH301139. This means the car left the Rouge Plant in Dearborn with the 312 CID engine with a single 4-barrel carburetor. The rest of the data plate means the following:
40 - Thunderbird body style
EE - Colonial White body with a Colonial White Hardtop
X4 (most likely XA) - Means the interior is Raven Black and Colonial White
31E- Scheduled build date (May 31, 1957)
3 - Ford-o-Matic transmission
1- 3.10 Rear Axle Ration
Lew Bachman
1957 Colonial White
