1957 speedometer needle.

Oh man I think I screwed up. I pulled the cover off my speedometer to clean the dial and then pulled the needle so I could paint it just like I did with my clock. Something went 'sproing' and can't get it back on and it seems there is a spring attached. Did I just ruin it. or can I put it back on while in place?
