What is this? This is located at the top front of the engine. The water hose for the heater return is connected to this. When the engine is running, coolant comes out of it.

I had the same problem. The coolant is coming out of the little holes at the underside of the heater controle valve. I opened the bad one and saw there was a crack in the membrane. You have to replace the heater controle valve. You can find it on ebay or Thunderbird specialist.

THis may not apply to you but if you use the wide mouth thermostat some of us use for better water flow you need to remove the lower extension on that valve. Usually they are just screwed into place. The wide mouth thermostat will hit it when it tries to fully open if you don't remove it.
