So, I have a 57 my father acquired in Feb of 58 from the local dealer. Drove it for 38 years through a 292, then a 312 then a rebuilt 292 for a total of 256,000 miles. I think the 2 speed Fordamtic saw multiple issues across that time but no records but believe it s still OEM. Was his daily driver back and forth to the Key West Naval base from the Lower Keys. Was just another car to him so had a hitch and towed boats, etc through my childhood.. He is gone now and I have decided to resurrect the old girl as she has been in storage for some time. Went ahead and ripped her down to the last nut and built. Shipped the body off to a shop as I am a just a chassis/engine guy. I plan to rebuild the y-block. I am not sentimental and want something reliable that my wife can drive so looking at minimum...
- Holley EFI Sniper or similar
- Front disk brakes - Assume will have to retain the rear drums to keep the track the same width
- Power steering - Borgeson or something similar
- Current Alternator/charging system
Just reached the bottom of this project with the chassis stripped down. That will get blasted and epoxy undercoat to match the bottom of the car that was shot last week.
So that is the backstory so far. Now I hung the 292 on a stand and stripped it down. Still have the piston/rods/crank/cam to pull. Noted some clues on the pistons having a bit to much clearance on the bores causing a little polish on the skirt tips so figure I will get the block and heads redone while I am going through the chassis rebuild. Then will build out the long block with the updates previously mentioned.
Anyone know a good shop in the Southeast US that does Y-blocks?
