1957 Ford-O-Matic Selector Shaft Seal Replacement

Hi, Is this an engine out to replace the gear selector shaft seal or can this be replaced in situ, any advice would be greatly appreciated as I know it’s not an easy fix!

My understanding is you can do it without pulling the engine or trans but you do need to go inside the transmission and take a couple things off, possibly the valve body, to get to the nut that holds that shaft in place. You have to be careful that things don't go flying as there is a spring and ball thing that does the "clicks" when you move it to shift. With the nut off you can slide it out, replace the seal, and put it back together.
