I had the steering box rebuilt for my 56 thunderbird. They had to replace the splined shaft that connects to the column, it was twisted. The new splined shaft has a larger groove on two sides of the shaft but I think the old splined shaft only had a large groove on one side, is this new shaft correct? Were there different splined shafts for different years? I'm having trouble getting the column to slide back on and am wondering if this is the reason. I can't fully see up the chrome casing on the column to compare it. Thank you for any help you can provide!

Im only aware of one large spline at the top, when wheels and steering wheel are oriented in a straight line.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up finding a chunk of crud was in the column side blocking them slipping together. I cleaned and lightly greased it and it slipped in with no issues and is working fine now. I still don't know if it's supposed to have one or two large splines but I suppose working is working🙂
