Problems lifting the soft top out from behind the seat. Looks like some element of power assist. Any suggestions on activating.

If you want answers to your questions, you need to properly title your posts. "1956 soft top" is vague and could be anything. Your title has been revised. Please follow the posting prompts moving forward.

That looks like the power seat mechanism. Not for the top.

The pictures show the replays, motor and associated mechanisms for the power seat. Do you have an original soft top with the swing arm? Can you give a fuller description as to the problem you are having? The manual tops can be a challenge to raise and lower properly.

I see that your car does have the swing arm. The instructions in the 1956 Thunderbird Owners Handbook say the first step is to move the seat all the way forward. I think if you do that you should be able to raise the top.
