Good thoughts Rurik. Turns out the old tank was a '55 in my '56. Purchased a new '56 steel tank and it lined right up after filler neck angle adjusted a few degrees. I'm using only ethanol free gas to hopefully keep the internal tank rust away. Atleast in my lifetime. 🙃Good morning , I have a 1955 and I have done a large amount of metal work on the trunk, inner rockers rear quarters etc.?I had to remove my tank to do this. In my opinion any rust inside the tank , I would consider replacement. If the car is new to you and you don’t know the history, it’s cheap insurance. Most steel tanks rust from the inside out. Also, my question would be, would the tank from a 56/57 be a different configuration with the sender placement? Maybe it’s a different year tank. Another thought, since you just bought this car, is it possible that the pan in the trunk was replaced and is off in fitment? How far off is the access hole from the sender? If it’s only an inch can you adjust the inboard side of the tank? I know that I had to move and adjust my tank as I was reinstalling it to make fitment line up. ( I used a motorcycle jack to support the tank and move it in place during installation. )
