I have a 1955 that was converted to 12V - so can I assume that if need to replace the alternator I can use a alternator from a 56 or 57 ? or I can get current one rebuilt. Any suggestions ? thanks in advance

Actually alternators did not exist in the mass market automobile world in 1955 or 1956. Depending on what alternator you have in your cars conversion use that type for a replacement. There are still shops that will rebuild your alternator. Although the usuall fail for alternators is that a diode fails it is no longer the norm to have alternators rebuilt in our disposable world.
