I am trying to clock the steering wheel. The alignment seems to be just one notch off from center. However the wheel seems to only go on in one position. Can the wheel be clocked by rotating one notch or will I have to put it on and have an alignment done to get the wheel straight?

Good information in related thread

I think a proper alignment is in the works. Couldn't hurt and they can adjust the tie rods to center the wheel. There is one larger spline to help align the wheel and that's why it will fit only one way. Good opportunity to check out the rest of the linkage. It's usual to feel the car wander a little chalking it off to old technology but having everything tightened up will make so much difference if you find some slop. The alignment shop should be able to point you in the right direction. A winter project and I can't even estimate what a front end refurbishment might cost but it's not outrageous and the drivability will convince you it was worth the money.

clocking the steering wheel is done by adjusting the tie rod ends. As you have noticed, the steering wheel only goes on in one position.

Thank you for the good info on clocking the steering wheel, on my 1955 had alignment done tracks ok but the steering wheel is just off a bit very annoying. I will have a new alignment done weather permitting with hopes they can correct the problem.
