Manual Shifter - is there a better one than stock?

I'm really struggling with this stock 3-spd shifter. It's so sloppy and such a poor design, I was wondering if there were ever any aftermarket shifters available for the T-Bird - I know there's not a lot of room in the trans tunnel...

I'm going to take it apart and see if I can get it tightened up, but I don't care for the design (same as early Hurst mystery shifter)...
