I have a 1991 Thunderbird 3.8 six cylinder. It has many miles
and I've had it since January of 2002. I was told my alternator
needs replacing. The cost will be $145.00. Is this reasonaable?
I would like to try it myself. I'm fairly mechanical and can purchase
a rebuilt one for about 70.00. I will be a senior in high school this
fall so money is tight. Any thing unusual I should know. I've helped my dad with his '47 ford flathead v-8 . Thanks for any help or advise.

Sorry you did not get an answer to your post sooner. I assume you already changed the alternator. Yes, the price is reasonable. It should take a good mechanic about 30 minutes to 1 hour and they always charge you by a set book value for time and I assume that is two hours by the books and 45-60 dollars per hour.

It is easy to do and I recommend you change it yourself. You should also consider a high capacity alternator, as this will meet your future needs: high output radios, etc.

Good Luck
