Looking for reliable info: I have a 95 bird with the 4.6. I have the torgue conv. problem that I believe every bird of this year had. I changed the fluid from mercron III to mercron V three years ago. It helped for a while but it's back to shuttering. A transmission shop wants $1500.00 to rebuild it. Would it be better to get a re-built/manufactured trans. to install myself?
I also let the car sit for a couple of years. I'm driving it again and some things no longer work correctly. The odometer no longer works nor does the trip odometer and the speed odometer sometimes sticks at any speed. Is it electronic or mechanical?
The air bag light blinks 3 pause 4 code. I don't know what that means but if I shut down and re-start the blinking usually stops.
If anyone knows any answer to these problems. I've love to know. Thanks

The odometer and speed-o meter are electrical and mechanical...it's electrical to the point of the dash board, then that electrical becomes mechanical (not 100% sure about the odometer as my SC is an earlier year). Usually it is a gear in the dash itself that gets stripped out and keeps the odometer from turning and the speed-o from working. These are seperate gears though, so it may be something else. There's a possibility that something came loose in the dash and that's why they aren't working. I tend to trouble shoot the problem to see if there's an easy fix before throwing money at it.

As for the tranny, it would be cheaper to get one and install it yourself. However, if you're not up to the task totally, it may just be easier to have it rebuilt and installed professionally. Either way, I highly suggest an after market tranny cooler ($30-$60) and then a custom tune. Your tranny is electronically controlled which means that for a tune (about $300 for an SCT chip and tune) you can increase the line pressure slightly. This will provide a more firm shift, but can still be managed to be tolerable. The big thing is that a firmer shift means the clutches are spinning less which means a much longer life on the transmission.
