The air condition is blowing through the defrost vent. Whats the problem and how to solve it

I believe that if you have any vacuum leaks, one of those leaks operate all the dampers on the a/c/heat system. The system will always default to the defrost mode. At least my 68 (which has the automatic climate control) my mechanic went thru 2 NOS "ac/heat computer like mixer units" before finding out it was just a vacuum leak that controls the dampers.
