1964 Odometer inoperative

This is a follow up on my odometer....I have checked and lubricated the cable, but the odometer is still inoperative. Have any other members dealt with this problem? Can the odometer be removed without pulling the whole dash out? I can gain access to the rear of the dash, but was reluctant to start disconnecting things. It looks like the odometer section is separate from the dash, my thought was to just remove the indicator and have it repaired or find a working unit and replace the bad one. Any thought from the knowledge base?
