My 1962 390ci with a replacement Holly carburetor is hard to start when warm or hot. The car starts when cold (has not been started in the last 8 hours) immediately! But when warm/hot it takes 60 seconds of cranking to start with black exhaust (rich) and running on a few cylinders. Smooth out after starting. I vacuum set the carburetor to the highest 18”. What would cause my starting issues?

Should I open or close the chock? It starts on the first spin when cold. The holly electric chock is now set in the middle of marks. Thanks Dave

With the engine cold, rotate the choke adjuster until the choke butterfly is completely open, then rotate the adjuster back the other way until the butterfly just closes, then tighten the hold down screws on the adjuster. Start the engine and observe the butterfly as the engine warms up, it should start to open after about 10 seconds and be completely open within 60-90 seconds.

You should not need any choke when it's warm. Also make sure you check the float level.

Has this happend earlier too? Is this a new car to you? Why does it have a replacement Holley carb? Not uncommon with boiling gas on these engines. Carb gaskets? Just thinking out loud ?

Purchased the car 2 years with Holley on already. Ran rich but started right up all the time. I then adjusted the carb and choke. It’s the hot restart that’s missed up. Has to turn over 45 seconds and then I have to crack the throttle to start. Dave

Thanks I did and much better now. .I backed it to wide open now. I just purchased a 1962 Autolite to rebuild. I now have to find the RPM increase mechanism for A/C. Dave

loose the Elec choke nothing but a problem when starting on these big ol devils! need a heap of fuel to fire when cold and an elec choke its worst enemy as it will close as current runs through it and wont re open till its hot
disconnected mine on a Holley and fixed open
when starting cold I crank her over to get oil up and fuel
pump pedal 4-6 times then as she fires keep pumping and revs up for about 2 minutes then shes a goer
i also fitted a carby insulator as i was having problems with vaporization when hot and trying to restart
runs like a dream now
