1957 Hole in trunk spare tire well

Is there supposed to be a round hole in the bottom of the spare tire well? If yes, should it have a plug of some sort? Please see the attached photo.

Yes, it is supposed to be there. I think it's to drain any water that accumulates so it doesn't rust out the tire well. I found a metal plug with little edge spring clips that fits - I think at Home Depot. I don't remember the diameter.

Thanks! Good to know it's supposed to be there. Your explanation makes sense and was the only reason I could imagine why it might be there.

It was a rubber plug originally.
