1957 Air Filters Glue/Adhesive?

Curious if there is a reason to use glue/adhesive on the air filter on 312 w/Holly 4 barrel carburetor. To remove mine I had to use a hair dryer on high heat to remove the filter. First photo is the bottom of the air filter, the silver spots are the adhesive.

I also scraped out the bottom of the air cleaner to remove the gunk from it. You can see where the adhesive was in second photo.

Thoughts on why?

I don't think it should be necessary. I guess if the metal parts got a little bent perhaps it's needed to get a good seal. If that were the case I'd try and find an alternative to that kind of glue for the seal. Perhaps some really thin weather-stripping foam that has sticky on only one side that would glue itself to the metal.
 
Looking at it again it's not even a complete seal, just glue spots, so it really makes no sense.
 
You’re right no sense. We have a 57 with the same air filter it doesn’t need sealing, the top and bottom of your assembly would need to be bent or twisted to cause problems. Check there’s no extra nut on attaching stud.

No extra nut. Just one wing nut.
 
Verify that there are enough threads on the stud that when the wing nut is down tight the top of the filter housing is tight to the top of the filter itself. Perhaps the wing nut is bottoming out on the stud before the lid is fully tight.
