I have trouble putting the vehicle in reverse. When on a slight upgrade, vehicle will not go into reverse.

Check out the shifter linkage. That car is 70 years old, and nobody knows how many times the transmission has been shifted. I have no idea if any of the T-Bird parts retailers have parts for the shifter. If it's real loose it could be your problem. Just guessing but it would be the first place I would check. It would be a great benefit if you could find some place where the care could go up on a lift while you watch the linkage on the transmission. If it's worn out, you may have to find a machinist who can repair the shifter.

Out of curiosity I just checked the internet for possible solutions for you if your shift linkage is the problem. First there are complete shifters on E Bay but they are spendy. Then National Auto Parts has new parts for your shifter. And then Larrys Thunderbird Parts has a shift linkage repair kit. I wish you good luck in repairing your Bird!

Your title "1956 Thunderbird with a three speed with overdrive Transmission" has been revised to summarize what your post is about. Also, since this is a Ford Thunderbird only site, you can omit the made/model of your car on future posts.
