64 Resto-Mod

In process of making a resto-mod 0n a 64 model-rescued from a junk yard off an eBay sale for $900.

It has been back on the road with interior rework and basic mechanical rework just to have some fun. Now we are taking it apart and will take it a bit further this time. It took a while to figure out the idea for the final look.

We chose resto mod because it had a 351 W transplant already. It actually works well because Galaxies of the same era had 289 or 302 options. So it bolts right up with a change of motor mounts. Only issue(positive) is about 600 pounds less weight. The car sat at a steep angle front to back so we took out the enormous front springs and replaced with an airbag suspension.

The brakes have been updated to dual reservoir master with disc from/drum rear.

Ignition has been updated to modern electronic- one turn and 1 second later you hear the nice hum of the motor- no endless churning at cold startup as well as hot.

The engine started and ran when we first bought it after a little tlc( last registration sticker was 20 years old). Other mods include a single Plane Torker II Al intake, Holley 700cfm 4bbl. Some small chrome dress ups.

Hydraulic pump in the original is a real dog- used a trick from bronco rebuilders- Saginaw pump which is clean install, one piece, no leaking lines. Had to grind out a custom bracket but no very difficult. Steering box is hard to reach and endless leaking- think about an electric power assist like dirt track race cars?

For tires I will go with 17x7 0 offset chrome with 10-12 spokes. It can do 250/50 R17 if the rear skirts are ditched. The 15 inch 205/70 are just too small and do not look right if it is not a proper restoration.

Putting together ideas for the electronics and wiring- fuse box under hood, all led lights, brake switch from hydraulic to elec. Thinking with one head light for low/high I can use the traditional high beam spot to make an air intake like the galaxie thunderbolts!

Anyway having a lot fun with it. If you have any questions or want some photos of the mods I can do that. If you have any ideas that you want to see some try let me know! Experimenting with different ideas is a lot of the fun for me.
