2005 Start up noise

2005 Thunderbird

Caution: sounds bad/scary.

-It goes away rapidly(5-9 seconds)
-Emanating from the front part of the engine
-Only on initial Cold Weather/Cold Engine start
-Only on cold mornings, summertime here in Virginia = no noise
-Replaced the belt, no change

Any insight? I'm thinking pulley, I don't know how to figure out which one....

If it is a high pitched sound could be the power steering. I had mine worked on for that this summer. Good luck.

Sounds like a main bearing or a rod bearing...once the oil pressure is up it fills up the worn places and the noise stops. My 63 Corvette is in the shop right now for the same thing and here is how it sounded:

There is an outside chance its something else; but my money is on bearings...

What about the starter bendix? Maybe the starter gear is hanging up and not retracting after the engine starts. Can you try to describe the noise?

Sounds like a classic ford timing chain (broken guide) .... How many miles? How often do you change oil ? Do you use a Motorcraft Filter...?

Less than 20k, no Motorcraft filter.

I had that same thought but it didn't make sense that the noise would stop after 6-9 seconds...

Less than 20k, no Motorcraft filter.

Change oil No more than 5000 miles. Always use a Motorcraft Filter. It has a Silicone anti-drain back valve. Helps prevent oil from draining out of the filter and engine when the engine is not running.

Good news, that does not sound like an engine bearing noise. If it was, it would follow the engine RPM. I think you may be having a problem with the bearing(s) in the idler and/or tensioner pulley(s). It could also be any of the driven accessories causing excessive drag on the belt. Look for the tensioner bouncing back and forth while the noise is happening, if its movement matches the sound you are on the right track. Good luck.

Check your power steering fluid. Mine was low and made similar sound.

If you are collecting guesses, my guess would be the fan has a blade hitting something until it is blown out of the blade path. I would take the top cover off the space between grill and engine and see if I could use a spotlight or strobe light to see what is going on. But then that is just a guess.......
