Viewers,

My 390 engine when it is first started leaves black sooty deposits on the ground under the tailpipes stubs at the extreme rear. This goes away after it warms up but is ugly on the garage floor. Is this a choke adjustment problem or something else? The motor runs great but I'd like to fix this annoying and somewhat stinky problem.

Had the same problem with my 63, plug gaps set wrong, point's gap set wrong, incorrect plugs, incorrect coil, choke plate not dropping to vertical when engine had warmed up, idling too fast, all fixed now, purrs like a lion.

Hi there, It's running too rich when it starts up. If it's only happening during the starting cycle, then likely the choke isn't opening or isn't opening as soon as it should. TT's recommendations are good to. Making sure the ignition system is up to snuff as well as fuel delivery should take care of the problem.
