62 Steering box adjustment in car

Hi
is there any adjustment on the steering gearbox to take any slack out? I've replaced all the steering components apart from the actual steering gear box and noted there is about an 1" of travel on the steering wheel before it moves the associated linkages. Or is it just wornout and needing pro rebuild? Here in the UK its difficult to get these looked at or vastly expensive to but from the US.
